Agentic PIM glossary

AI agentA program built on a language model that, given a goal, decides which steps to take, uses tools (querying data, editing a product, launching a translation) and checks the result, rather than simply answering a question.

The difference from a chatbot is the autonomy to act: a chatbot answers; an agent does. In an agentic PIM, each agent has a specific task (enriching, translating, categorising), a set of tools and limited permissions.

Agent, assistant and automation

  • Classic automation: fixed rules ("if X happens, do Y"). Predictable, but it doesn't understand content.
  • AI assistant: generates content when a person asks it to.
  • AI agent: detects pending work, plans it, carries it out and validates it, within the limits you set.

Good agents work with human review at decision points and leave a trail of every change.
