Model Context Protocol (MCP)
Agentic PIM glossary
Model Context Protocol (MCP)An open protocol that standardises how AI assistants and agents connect to external systems to read data and perform actions, so that any compatible client can use the tools an MCP server exposes.
Before MCP, every integration between an AI and a system was a custom build. With MCP, a system publishes its tools once (for example: "search products", "update attribute", "list incomplete products") and any compatible client — Claude, Cursor, ChatGPT, n8n — can use them.
MCP in a PIM
An MCP server in your PIM turns the catalogue into something your agents can query and edit. What matters is that it respects the same role-based permissions and the same audit trail as the rest of the system.
